Frequently Asked Questions
Are rotors and adapters included with the HD-M280?
No. The HD-M280 is sold as caliper and lever assemblies only β rotors, post-mount adapters and mounting bolts are not included. This lets you pick rotor diameter and adapter combinations to suit your fork and frame.
What fluid does this brake use and can I use DOT fluid?
The HD-M280 uses mineral oil. Do not use DOT brake fluid β DOT is hygroscopic and chemically incompatible with mineral-oil systems and will damage seals. Use Tektro-compatible mineral oil for best results.
Can I shorten the hoses to fit my frame?
Yes. The brakes ship partly unassembled with 1900mm hoses for front and rear so you can cut them to the correct length and install the fittings. We recommend professional hose cutting and bleeding if youβre not comfortable with the process.
What rotor thickness is compatible?
The HD-M280 is compatible with rotors that are 1.8mm thick. Confirm rotor thickness and mount spacing when choosing replacement rotors to ensure proper pad clearance and caliper alignment.
How many pistons does the caliper have and what is the braking feel?
Each caliper has two pistons. That layout delivers a balanced combination of bite and modulation that suits trail riding, commuting and light all-mountain use without the complexity or weight of larger multi-piston systems.
Is the brake lever adjustable for reach?
The HD-M280 includes a barrel adjustor for fine cable-free lever feel adjustments and independent pad adjust at the caliper, but it does not feature an integrated multi-stage mechanical reach dial. For major reach changes consider lever shims or alternate lever bodies compatible with your handlebars.
Buying Guide
Choosing a MTB hydraulic brake centers on balance: stopping power, modulation, weight and maintenance. The Tektro HD-M280 is aimed at riders who prioritize predictable, everyday braking performance and easy upkeep over race-grade power. If you ride trails, commute or carry light loads, a dual-piston system like the HD-M280 offers excellent modulation and lighter weight while keeping costs down. When buying, confirm your frame and fork post-mount standards, pick a rotor diameter that matches your braking needs (larger for heavier loads or steep descents), and budget for adapters and a bleed kit if you plan to install them yourself. For long-term reliability choose mineral oil and follow a regular pad and rotor inspection schedule.
